For 4th of July weekend, you'll definitely need to look at campgrounds with first-come, first-served sites. A couple of suggestions:|
Hanna Flat Campground near Fawnskin, north shore of Big Bear Lake. The campground has some first-come, first-served sites. The Grout Bay trail starts right from site #51. This is a perfect beginner trail. Don't let the short, steep climb out of the campground discourage you. The rest of the trail is easy, rolling, non-technical singletrack. There are many points where the trail crosses a dirt road. Continue as far as you want, and retrace your route back to the campground. Plenty of dirt roads in the area, as well.
McGill Campground at Mt. Pinos Recreation Area is another good choice. It's all first-come, first served. Here you'll find nice trails suitable for a beginner. A perfect easy ride from the campground is to climb up the South Ridge trail to Mt. Pinos Campground, and then go out-and-back on the Iris Point trail. There are many other nice trails in the area. A beginner will probably find these trails a bit steep for climbing, but you have a number of options where you can climb on pavement and descend on trail.
