Mongoose D40 upgrade help!!!
I bought a Mongoose D40, well when they first came out, and it has been sitting in the shed for about 4-5 years now. I am fixing to start back to school and also do a little bit of trail riding, and I dont really want to pay 500 for another bike. So, what kind of upgrades do I need to do to this bike to make it top notch. I am fixing to take it to the shop this week or next and me being bike illiterate, I want to go in prepared and knowing what I need and want. I dont know anything about "retro" fitting so thats why I am coming to you guys for your help. Help me make my old bike a great bike at a good budget. SO anyone and everyone give me some ideas and advice.

TUNE-UP: Clean, lube chain, shifters/brake cables, seat post/clamp, brake boss and pedals; adjust shifter (derailleurs)/brake cables. Test shifting and braking. Check and adjust rear shock. True wheels.

REPAIR/MAINTENANCE: Clean and repack: headset, cranks (bottom bracket), hubs and pivot points; clean rim brake surfaces with light sanding - 200 grit.

REPLACE: Tires/tubes, front shock and brake pads.

    TOOLS?????

SAVE MONEY and TROUBLE: Invest on a used entry level mountain bike. Check the above prices at your LBS and be surprised.

don't spend any money on it unless you need new tires, tubes, brake pads or seat. the D40 was a venture by Pacific, which branded their Pacific bike with the Mongoose brand. Now Mongoose has mtn bikes that sell for $3,000, but those are the bike shop ones that are only available at LBS. Therefore it would be a waste to spend any money to upgrade your bike. Just ride it and save up for a better ride. Putting money into that bike is like putting money into a 6 year old computer, in the long run its cheaper to buy a new one with new parts.
